Taormina is Sicily’s most famous resort, thanks to its coastal and panoramic view facing the Ionian Sea adorned with sandy beaches and numerous touristic attractions.
For good swimming guests should try Taormina’s main beaches Mazzaro’ and Spisone and the so called Mediterranean pearl Isola Bella, all of which boast crystal water and breathtaking views. Further south, for historical and cultural interests are the ruins of ancient Naxos situated in Capo Schiso’ and to the west is Gole dell’Alcantara, a 20 m deep gorge of basalt rock. The most glorious monument of the past at Taormina is the 3rd century BC theatre built by the Greeks and among other Classical remains are the ruins of the odeon used for musical performances and the naumachia, an artificial lake for mock battles.
